Six semester or nine quarter hours of credit earned from a regionally accredited university are required for renewal or reinstatement of a Regular five-year certificate. At least three semester hours must be upper division (Course numbers 300 and above) or graduate level credit.
Your six renewal credits must meet one of the following requirements:
• Related to your employment at the time of renewal, if that employment requires a certificate;
• Related to at least one of your endorsement areas, or
• A required element of a program that will lead to an endorsement that you are actively pursuing.
CEUs with prior EED approval, non-academic credit can be substituted for three of the required six semester hours of credit.
Two years
Renewal:May be extended once pending completion of:
• 3 semester hours of approved Alaska studies coursework
• 3 semester hours of approved Alaska multicultural coursework
Five years
General requirements:To qualify for a Professional teacher certificate, an applicant must meet the following requirements:
• Two years of teaching experience while holding a valid teacher certificate**
• Passing scores on an approved basic competency exam (BCE)
• Passing scores on a content area exam
• Completion of a teacher preparation program as verified by on the Teacher Program Verification Form
• Official transcripts showing:
Three (3) semester hours of approved Alaska studies coursework
Three (3) semester hours of approved Alaska multicultural coursework
Six (6) semester hours of coursework completed in the five years prior to application (recency credit)
To renew a five-year certificate, applicants must meet the following requirements prior to the expiration date of their certificate:
• Renewal credit (Six semester hours of credit taken during the life of the certificate being renewed. A minimum of three semester hours must be upper division or graduate credit.) Renewal credits must be related to the certificated person’s employment at the time of renewal or the person’s endorsements.
Ten years
General requirements:To qualify for a Master certificate, an applicant must meet the following requirements:
• Meet all requirements for the Professional certificate
• Hold a current Initial or Professional certificate
• Hold current National Board certification issued by NBPTS
To renew a Master certificate, applicants must meet the following requirements:
• Renewal credit (Six semester hours of credit taken during the life of the Master certificate being renewed. A minimum of three semester hours must be upper division or graduate credit.) Renewal credits must be related to the certificated person’s employment at the time of renewal or the person’s endorsements.
