Autism Mindsets for Educators - #IMW23010

Course Description

From looking beyond the ‘autism spectrum disorder’ label to preparing students for adulthood, this course is designed to empower educators with effective, research-based strategies to incorporate into their classrooms and professional practices. Course participants will examine nine strength-based mindsets necessary for navigating autism - as presented by Dr. Temple Grandin and psychologist Dr. Debra Moore. This course prepares educators by emphasizing strengths and assets of individuals with autism to maximize their potential inside and outside of school.

Global Goals of the Course

The following global goals of the course exist to deepen and/or apply the content and skills of teachers’ existing professional knowledge:

  1. To evaluate course-related research, literature, content, and strategies and formulate connections and applications to educator practice.
  2. To incorporate Dr. Temple Grandin’s 9 mindsets for maximizing the potential of students on the autism spectrum into one’s professional practices.
  3. To design an effective learning environment that incorporates essential best practices for the inclusive classroom.
  4. To develop lessons, activities, and accommodations that are designed to meet the individualized strengths and needs of students on the autism spectrum.
  5. To compile a list of resources to further enhance your professional educational practice of working with students on the autism spectrum.

Steve Novak is a great instructor. I have enjoyed every single class that I have taken of his! He is knowledgeable, fun, and enthusiastic, which is helpful after working all day and then logging on to a class. The class information and the way that it is presented is clever and invaluable. The course was amazing. The subject was of high interest to me. The instructor was easy to talk to and personable. He made me feel very welcome as a newcomer. He utilized cooperative teaching strategies, engaging the participants through collaboration. It was a great learning community.

Interactive courses are delivered via Zoom at specific times with a live instructor.
