Certificate Renewal for Tennessee Teachers

Professional Development

To earn PDPs, an activity must be related to improving educator effectiveness by:
• developing content knowledge, pedagogical knowledge, or pedagogical content knowledge; or
• enhancing educator effectiveness (e.g. world language courses for those working with students for whom English is a second language, or coursework that supports understanding and use of data

PDP activities may include:
• Professional Learning - 1 clock hour = 1 PDP - Certificate Required
• University coursework - 1 semester credit = 10 PDPs - official transcript required

Practitioner Teacher License

Validity

Three years

Renewal

May be renewed once, educator must:
• complete an approved educator preparation program; and
• submit passing scores on all required content and pedagogical assessments

Advancement

To advance from a practitioner license to a professional license, teachers must:
• complete an approved educator preparation program
• submit passing scores on required content and literacy assessments
• have three years of experience; and
• have a recommendation from the director of schools or documentation of 30 professional development points (PDPs)

Professional Teacher License

Renewal

To renew a professional license, an educator must:
• submit 60 PDPs
• PDPs must be accrued during the validity period of the license

Instructional Leader License

Renewal

To renew and ILL or ILL-P, an administrator must:
• currently serve in administrator position in an approved Tennessee public school system or Category 1, Category 2, or Category 3 approved non-public school
• have been evaluated as an administrator for the previous two years under the Tennessee Instructional Leadership Standards (TILS)
• have completed or currently completing the required Tennessee Academy for School Leaders (TASL) credit hours required for each two year cycle
• have completed or currently completing the required Tennessee Academy for School Leaders (TASL) credit hours required for each one year cycle (July 1 - June 30)
• submit an administrator license renewal application and TASL hours in TNCompass for approval by the department's office of educator effectiveness
