Certificate Renewal for Texas Teachers

Continuing Professional Education (CPE)

CPE can be earned via:
• Undergraduate and graduate coursework through an accredited college; one semester hour is equivalent to 15 CPE hours
• Private companies listed on the TEA-approved CPE providers list

TCL offers graduate credit through our regionally accredited university providers and non-credit CPE as a TEA-approved provider

Teacher Certificate

Validity

Five years

Renewal

• Classroom teachers must complete 150 CPE hours
• No more than 150 CPE hours are required, even if you hold multiple classroom certificates
• For all standard certificates, 80% of CPE activities should be directly related to the certificates being renewed and focus on the standards required for the certificates
• Classroom teachers, principals, and school counselors may not complete more than 25% of CPE training activities specified in TAC

Administrative Certificate

Renewal

• Administrators must complete 200 CPE hours
• No more than 200 CPE hours are required, even if you hold multiple certificates, such as Classroom, Administrative and Student Services Certificates

Student Services Certificate

Validity

Five years

Renewal

• Holders of the Student Services Certificate must complete 200 CPE hours
• No more than 200 CPE hours are required, even if you hold multiple certificates, such as Classroom, Administrative and Student Services Certificates
