Course Description

This course is designed to provide educators with an in-depth understanding of how to foster the cognitive development of today’s children in PreK-2nd grades. From a focus on innovative tools and resources for teaching science, technology, engineering, arts, and math (STEAM) to incorporating a multi-sensory approach to learning early literacy skills – teachers will discover valuable research-based instructional and assessment practices designed to help all students maximize their learning potential in both virtual and in-person classrooms. This course also includes an emphasis on the roles healthy lifestyles, social and emotional learning (SEL), family engagement, and the great outdoors play in building strong cognitive foundations for student success in school and beyond.

Global Goals of the Course

The following global goals of the course exist to deepen and/or apply the content and skills of teachers’ existing professional knowledge:

  1. Evaluate course-related research, literature, content, and strategies and formulate connections and applications to professional practice.
  2. Develop learning experiences that support the cognitive, academic, and social/emotional development of children in PK-2nd grade.
  3. Design an effective learning environment that incorporates essential best practices for the PK-2nd grade classrooms for both virtual and in-person classrooms.
  4. Develop standards-based lessons that are universally designed to meet the needs of all learners in the inclusive classroom for both virtual and in-person classrooms.
  5. Facilitate meaningful partnerships with families/caregivers, fellow educators, administrators, and other stakeholders to enhance the learning and development of children.

I loved taking the course live on Zoom. In addition to the course materials, I learned so much from the experiences and expertise of other course participants. Steve was an excellent facilitator who drew out deeper thinking through skillful questioning.
